I spent a day with Amazon's Alexa : It's not perfect, but it's much smarter

PCWorld

"Alexa," I asked the Echo display in my kitchen, "what was that song from The Hills? You know, that MTV show? Can you play it on the Echo Show in the office?" The old Alexa wouldn't have had a prayer of answering such a poorly worded query. But the new Alexa, now packing AI-enhanced smarts, handled it easily.

Everything announced at Amazon's Alexa AI event

Engadget

Amazon held its first major product event of the year on Wednesday and, as expected, it was largely about Alexa. The company first announced its next-gen, AI-powered voice assistant back in 2023, but technical issues forced Amazon to delay its formal unveiling and rollout. An Alexa upgrade means that Amazon has a swathe of new devices ready to support the latest version of the voice assistant. Amazon's hardware chief, Panos Panay, and his devices and services team were at the event to show off Alexa . Here's a rundown of everything Amazon announced at its first devices event of 2025: After lots (and lots) of boring rambling about generative AI from Amazon CEO Andy Jassy at Wednesday's event, Panay took the mic to start sharing the actual news. Alexa is the name of the company's upgraded voice assistant.

My Favorite Things an Amazon Echo Show Can Do (2024)

WIRED

There are a ton of tricks that smart displays can do. But not all of them are created equal or are worth doing on this style of advice. The basics are easy--just about anyone knows how handy it is to ask any smart speaker or smart display to tell you the weather or play music. It's their best use case, especially since smart displays like the Echo Show can give you more weather details onscreen. But that's not all these handy devices do, and for the price you should get the most out of any smart display you buy.

Amazon Echo Hub Review: Bare-Bones Smart Display

WIRED

I've been testing and writing about smart displays since they first launched, a screen slapped onto the ever-growing world of smart speakers. Since the introduction of the massive Echo Show in 2017, Amazon's displays have consistently felt a little bulky and overstuffed, trying to be too many things at once, with design taking more of a backseat. Instead of a classic smart display with a large speaker, it's a wall-mounted display designed for controlling your smart home. The design is reminiscent of a home security system panel or a control panel for a custom smart-home system like Control4--but also looks unsurprisingly similar to an Echo Show, just without the speaker backing. The speaker isn't the only feature chopped off from the Echo Hub.

The tech industry still has a long way to go when it comes to accessibility

Engadget

As many in the accessibility community will tell you, inclusive design isn't an endeavor that's "one and done." It's a continuous, ongoing effort to ensure that as new products and services are made, people with different needs or disabilities aren't left out. Over the last three years, Engadget has produced a report, in addition to our regular coverage, that looks back on the developments in the tech industry that impact the accessibility community, focusing on the largest companies like Apple, Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Meta. Of course, there are plenty of other big companies to consider, like Uber, Airbnb, Netflix and more. But the six we've selected have an outsized impact and influence on the industry..

Amazon's Create With Alexa generates unique animated children's stories on Echo Show

Engadget

Tools like DALL-E 2, Stable Diffusion and Midjourney, which generate images based on a few lines of text, briefly set social media ablaze this year. But Amazon's entry into the AI art world is a bit different. Create with Alexa lets children guide the creation of animated stories using a few kid-friendly prompts. Since Create with Alexa is visual storytelling, it's only available on Echo Show devices, not the company's audio-only speakers. Amazon says it works whether the device is in Amazon Kids mode or not.

Living with Astro, Amazon's home robot

#artificialintelligence

Amazon's household robot is exactly what I expected, but it's not what I wanted and it definitely isn't what anyone asked for. Instead of a multitasking mimicry of me that can empty the dishwasher, pick up my kids' shoes, feed the dog, and clean the house, Amazon's first attempt at a home bot is simply a souped-up Echo Show on wheels. It also has two cameras that it uses to find people and places in your home to deliver items, reminders, or timers. It can act as a security guard and patrol your home when paired with a Ring subscription, and it can fart and burp. In short, the Astro does everything Amazon's smart home products and services already do -- only on wheels. But the Astro is a robot. And that part is really cool.

Google Nest cameras now work with Amazon Alexa devices

Engadget

The smart home ecosystem is getting a little more integrated: Google just updated its Amazon Alexa Skill to work on its latest Nest cameras. So if you already own a variety of Nest and Alexa devices, they'll work together more seamlessly moving forward. Now, you can stream live feeds from your Nest cameras, doorbells and other devices to anything from your Amazon Fire TV to any Echo device. Amazon made a similar gesture to open up its own smart home ecosystem last month, when it announced that its doorbells and security cameras would work with Google Nest, Ring, Abode and other third-party devices. Amazon's Ring doorbell already works with Google Home and Apple Homekit.
